NOUVELLES LECTURES COSMOPOLITES
BIOGRAPHY
NLC was born in 1989. They are Julien Ash and Angustére.
The first works are industrial-oriented, they released together
Lost Sand Divinities MINICD and the first three tapes. Then they
split up, but released together two tapes under the name of Maelstrøm
and Triste Nuit Pour. Then, Julien Ash released his solo album
Incandescent, and then he continued alone his adventure with NLC.
But sometimes Angustére will appear playing some instrument in future
works.
In about ten years of existence NLC were very prolific, and the other
releases embrace a wide range of styles and influences. I already said
in the intro that NLC's music is very difficult to classify. This is because
the music may vary from album to album. But in my opinion NLC (Ash,
sometimes with guest musicians, as you can see in discography) conquers
listener with any release.
The music is prevalently instrumental, but sometimes you can hear
voices or chants in the background.
Of course NLC doesn't play live.
Besides, there is an important consideration to be made:
Julien Ash doesn't live on NLC sales. No, he has his job (his "tiring
job", he wrote me) and he doesn't consider himself a professional
musician. What does it mean? Simply, I think that NLC is for him a
passion. It means that he isn't forced to release the sold-out single, he
isn't forced to allow interviews to promote his last album, he isn't
forced to write ten songs within the month.
In my opinion, it means he is an artist, a real artist, and he diffuses
his art when he wants, how he wants, if he wants. He makes no
compromises and has not deadline to meet.
Well, most of his releases are published by E.D.T., his personal
independent label, often in limited editions.
Other labels connected to NLC are: Karismatik (Venus De Mille
Eaux 7" & Unis CD), Bastet Recordings (Le Langage Des Autres
CD-R); Nouvelles Propagandes (Maelstrøm's Ecmnesia TAPE);
Permis De Construire (Allegro Vivace cd); Fast Forward Recordings
(Secret Of Oïkema split-CD); Prikosnovénie (Naked TAPE);
Harmonie (Fragments Taôiste TAPE).
The majority of these labels have also published compilations where
NLC are present with some track, often unreleased elsewhere (see
discography for better info).
